Aliman and Mer  Back to Gallery Back to Main Page

Aliman Francisco and Mamerto Martin ("Mer") were the fieldwork assistants who accompanied me into the forest for the two years of my research. Both were good-natured and outgoing men in their early middle age. Mer and I had become friends when I was at the Mission of St. Francis of Assisi in Upi; he had been employed by the Mission as a catachist and we had made many a long hike together to Teduray outstation chapels. He was a careful and tireless helper in Figel. I had not known Aliman prior to the anthropological fieldwork experience, but he too was an invaluable aid. A gifted storyteller, he loved nothing more than to sit for hours chatting with people and drawing from them stories about their life and ways. (See Chapter 1)
